04/16 OILERS @ COBRAS

Uintah Basin Oilers-12, Utah Cobras-19
Saturday, April 16, 2016
Pleasant Grove, Utah- Pleasant Grove High School Field

The Utah Cobras hosted the Uintah Basin Oilers in windy Pleasant Grove, UT on Saturday.  Weather had a major impact on the game, as the high-speed winds created difficulty in the passing game..

Uintah Basin received the ball to begin the game.  The Oilers struggled in their first drive, as QB Jake Ihde threw an interception to the Cobra secondary.  However, the Cobras would exchange turnovers with the Oilers as QB Ryan Workman threw an interception on the Cobra’s opening drive as well.

The Oilers were unable to capitalize on the turnover as they failed to move the ball.  Utah’s defense came up with the stop to give the Cobras offense another attempt at points.

The Cobra offense capitalized on the ensuing drive, as Workman found the end zone on the ground for the third week straight, this time on a 60-yard jaunt for 6.  Brady Young’s PAT was no good, as the Cobra lead remained 6-0.

Uintah Basin’s offense continued to struggle down the stretch, but their defense was able to force turnovers and more opportunities for their offense to score points.  The Oiler defense was able to intercept Workman two more times, but their offense was still unable to capitalize.

On the opening kickoff of the second half, Cobra DB Kenja Mapp took the kickoff a few yards and pitched the ball to Ladale Jackson, who advanced the lateral 70 yards for the score.  The missed 2-point conversion would keep the score 12-0 in favor of the Cobras.

The Oilers were still unable to sustain drives or find points, as the Cobras capitalized on the defensive pressure on Ihde and the Oilers offense.  Workman connected with Steven Kinyon for the 60 yard score to put the Cobras ahead 19-0 following the Young PAT.

With 6 minutes remaining in the game, the Oilers would find offensive rhythm for the first time.  Ihde connected on a deep pass to the Cobra 15-yard line.  RB Jared Ihde would then score on an arguable fumble in the end zone. The 2-point conversion was failed, leaving the score at 19-6.

The Cobras sustained a lengthy drive to run the clock.  However, the drive resulted in a Cobra miscue as they would fumble it back to the Oilers.  On the last play of the game, Ihde found WR Travis Maxfield for the score as time expired.

Oiler QB Jake Ihde completed just 6 of 20 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown.  Most of the yards that Ihde produced through the air were from big plays, including the 72-yard pass to Travis Maxfield, who caught 2 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.  Carl Dieckman had one reception for 59 yards and Jared Ihde also had one catch for 50 yards.  Jared led the offense on the ground with 21 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown.

The Oiler defense was led by Jackson Pulufana with 4.5 tackles and Jared Ihde with 3.5 tackles.  Travis Maxfield also had 2 interceptions, while Jeff Giles had one to aid in the defensive efforts for the Oilers.

Cobra QB Ryan Workman completed 8 of 23 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown.  Workman led the ground efforts with 89 yards on 9 carries and a touchdown, including a big run of 60 for the score.  Steven Kinyon and Illiott Alexander led the Cobra receivers, as Kinyon caught 2 passes for 80 yards and Alexander had 2 for 44 yards.  Kinyon also added a touchdown for the Cobra’s final score of the game.

Utah’s defensive unit was led by Matthew Birrenkott with 6 tackles and Jeremy Covington with 5.5 tackles.

Brandon Martinez and Ryan Birrenkott each had an interception for the Cobra defense.

This week, the Uintah Basin Oilers host the Wyoming Outlaws in Vernal, UT.  The Utah Cobras will travel to Elko, NV to face the Nevada Warriors.
