The Wasatch Revolution and the Vegas Hawks met for the first time, as the game was played in Henderson, NV at Coronado High School near Las Vegas.  The REV took care of business last week in a commanding 42-7 victory over the Davis Vipers and looked to continue their momentum.  The Hawks, on the other hand, faced their fourth straight defeat.

 

Wasatch received the opening kickoff and proceeded in driving on their first possession.  The REV made it down to the goal line, but failed to capitalize as the drive resulted in a REV fumble to give the Hawks possession for the first time.  However, the ensuing Hawks drive wouldn’t last as they fumbled the ball back to the REV, who took possession at the 1-yard line.  REV RB Avei Hunkin would punch it in from there to give the REV a 6-0 lead.  Rob

 

Marshall would then help the REV to an 8-0 lead with a successful 2-point conversion. On the next REV drive, they were able to drive into the redzone for a chance to increase the lead by two scores when the Hawks forced another fumble.  The Hawks were forced to punt, which then resulted in another REV drive that would nearly result in more points.  This time, Chase McMurdie was unable to connect on the field goal.  On the ensuing Hawks drive, QB Willie Brisco would connect with Trey Robinson from 70 yards out for the Hawks first score.  The two-point conversion was no good leaving the score 8-6.

 

The REV answered the Hawks score with a drive that resulted in a 35-yard touchdown pass from QB Charlie Peterson to WR Joe Mapson followed by a successful McMurdie PAT that would put the REV in the lead 15-8 with 1:38 left in the half.  A quick 3-and-out by the REV defense helped the offense gain possession and move the ball effectively for yet another score before the half.  Peterson hit WR Trevor Jensen for the 20-yard score followed by a failed 2-point conversion that would put the REV ahead 21-6 at halftime.

 

The third quarter featured no scoring on either side, as the REV would come close to finding six more.  The Hawks defense held the REV from a close score that resulted in the first and only interception thrown by Peterson in the redzone to give the Hawks an opportunity.

 

It wasn’t until early in the fourth quarter when the scoring continued.  Again, Peterson connected with Mapson for another REV score.  The PAT by McMurdie increased the REV lead 28-6 with 9:45 left in the game.  Vegas quickly found the endzone on their next possession, as the Hawks connected on the WR screen to place the ball inside the 5-yard line.  On the very next play, the Hawks hit pay dirt with a Brisco pass to Xavier Treevino.  The failed 2-point conversion kept the score at 28-12 with a little over 8 minutes in the game.

 

The ensuing REV drive took 4 and a half minutes off the clock and resulted in a punt that placed the Hawks at their own 10-yard line.  Vegas took advantage of the possession and capitalized on the first play with a 60-yard pass and catch followed by a 10-yard penalty that gave the Hawks 1st-and-10 at the REV 20-yard line.  The Hawks capitalized in the redzone with a score from Brisco on a scramble to the endzone.  Once again, the 2-point conversion was no good and left the REV lead at 28-18 with under 3 minutes in the game.

 

Despite the Hawks efforts in the comeback, the REV offense was able to sustain their final drive with strong runs that left the Hawks defense on the field to the end.  The clock expired with the board flashing 28-18 in favor of the REV.

 

Hawks QB Willie Brisco completed 13-of-27 for 248 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Brisco was also the leader in the rushing efforts with 40 yards on 3 carries and a touchdown.  His two targets on the day were Xavier Treevino with 7 receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown, and Trey Robinson with 6 receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown.

 

Defensively, the Hawks were led by Rohan Walters with 7 tackles.  Trey Robinson contributed on the defensive side of the ball, as he finished with 6 tackles.

 

REV QB Charlie Peterson finished 16-of-28 for 293 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Peterson distributed the ball to five different receivers in the process.  WR Joe Mapson caught 7 passes for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns as the lead target on the day.  Jaylon Terry caught 3 passes for 45 yards, while WR Trevor Jensen caught 3 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown.  RBs Zach Guerts and Avei Hunkin led the rushing efforts for the REV.  Guerts rushed for 84 yards on 9 carries.  Hunkin shared the carries with 6 of his own for 43 yards and a touchdown.

 

The REV defense had multiple leaders, including Ian Eyre and Sebastian Tautalatasi with 3 tackles apiece, and a sack and a forced fumble to add to Eyre’s performance.

 

The Wasatch Revolution improve to 3-1 and will play host to the Utah Shock, who are also 3-1 after their convincing 35-14 victory over the Utah Wildcats on Saturday.  The Vegas Hawks drop to 0-4 and will be on a bye week before they take on the Las Vegas Raiders in Henderson, NV on May 7th.
