The Wyoming Outlaws (0-2) opened at home for the first time this season against the Nevada Warriors (1-1) in Lyman, Wyoming in a cool early afternoon contest.  The two teams met two weeks earlier in Elko, Nevada with the Warriors winning 28-21.  Saturday, the Outlaws found themselves in an early season must-win situation. 

The game started off with Elko relying on their power run game.  They had success moving the ball until the stingy Outlaw defense stopped the Warriors, forcing them to punt.  Tanner McQuillan received the punt on the Outlaws 20-yard line and darted his way into the end zone.  A block in the back call negated the score and put the Outlaws offense deep in their own territory.

Outlaw quarterback Hugo Herrera, who threw for 125 yards on 9-of-22 passing on the day, started the first Outlaw drive. The Outlaws moved the ball well mixing the run and pass. John Herrera rushed strong through the day amassing 85 yards rushing on 15 carries and also threw for 30 Yards.

On a third and three situation Warrior QB Eli DeJesus looked to the flats and found Outlaw linebacker Michael Williams for the pick 6.  Again, the score was negated by a roughing the passer penalty.  Mistakes had cost the Outlaws 14 points against the dangerous DeJesus and the Warriors.

With the game scoreless, a fumble by the Outlaws handed the ball to the Warriors inside their own 5-yard line.  Outlaw OLB Justin Antonino, who finished with 9 tackles 7 of which were behind the line of scrimmage, had a big tackle in the back field followed by a Michael Williams interception in the end zone.  The defense, again, had risen to the occasion including a great play by the always threatening Keith Lewis, who finished with 5 tackles (3 for loss); and Nate Jeppsen, who was able to corral DeJesus for 2 sacks.

The game remained scoreless through the first quarter.  Midway through the 2nd quarter Hugo Herrera connected with Tanner McQuillan in the end zone for the Outlaw’s first score.  McQuillan finished with 3 receptions and two touchdowns.  His second score coming off an 85-yard punt return.  His two touchdowns provided the only scoring of the game.

 

The Outlaws won their first home game of 2016 shutting out the Nevada Warriors, 14-0. 
This Saturday, the Wyoming Outlaws travel to Vernal, Utah to face the Uintah Basin Oilers.  The Nevada Warriors are at home facing the Utah Division leaders and undefeated Utah Cobras in Elko, Nevada.
