Opening day in the RMFL featured the back-to-back RMFL Champion, the Wasatch Revolution, and the 6-time champs, the Vegas Trojans.  Everyone knew this was going to be an epic battle that both teams have been waiting for since the schedule came out.

The Trojans started their first drive with a couple of good runs but with some bad penalties they were forced to punt the ball to the REV.  Quarterback Charlie Peterson, on the first play, tried to go up top but the play resulted in a pass deflection.  After a first down by the REV, Trojans DE Devierre Glenn sacked Peterson.  On the very next play, Peterson would throw his first of 4 interceptions of the day to LB Cornell Johnson, who looked to be on his way to pay dirt when he pulled a hammy and was lost for the rest of the game.  However, two plays later, Trojan QB James Cammack connected with WR Kimo Hutchinson for a touchdown that put the Trojans on the board, 7-0.
On the ensuing REV drive, Peterson threw his second interception of the game to CB Dejon Hatcher, who had 2 interceptions for the game.  The Trojans were unable to capitalize on the turnover, as the stingy REV defense held the Trojans to no points.  Wasatch received the ball back and on the first play the snap would sail over Peterson’s head and was recovered by Glenn for the score to extend the Trojans lead to 14-0.

The REV received the ball back and would put together a good drive looking to put points on the board, but failed to do so as they missed the field goal.  Vegas’s next drive was stalled once again by the REV defense to get the ball back.  Wasatch continued to run into trouble, as the next drive resulted in a Peterson interception to Hatcher to end the half.

WR Bryant Eteuati made some great catches to start the 3rd quarter, but ended the drive with a 3-and-out.  However, on 4th down during the REV punt, the Trojans were called for illegal hands to the face to give the REV new life.  The REV took advantage of the Vegas miscue, as Peterson found WR Delric Ellington for the score to cut the lead to 14-7.  Once again, the REV defense prevailed in stopping the Trojans on the next drive to force the punt.

On the next drive, Glenn had another of his 4 sacks on the day and forced Peterson to fumble the ball, which was then recovered by Trojan DE Edwin Carter to give the team another shot at extending their lead by 14.
The REV defense came up with another stop after the Trojans decided to gamble on 4th down.  Following two successful first downs, the REV would commit yet another miscue as a Peterson pass would be tipped at the line of scrimmage and fall into the hands of Trojan DT Josh Hunt to end the 3rd.

On the second play of the 4th, QB James Cammack, who had struggled all day going 6 for 18 with only 84 yards, connected with Hutchinson on a 45 yard bomb to the 12-yard line.  With the next play, RB Mike Ball ran it in to put the Trojans up 21-7 late in the 4th.

Peterson began the next drive hitting WR Travis Anderson on a 35 yard pass play to put the REV in great field position.  Two plays later, with no quit in the REV, Peterson found Ellington for a long gain of 27 yards down to the 3-yard line.  On the very next play, RB DeAngelo Branche would find the end zone on the ground to bring the REV within 7.

The Trojan’s next drive kept the clock running as they were able to get a first on 3rd down; but after a couple of penalties, the REV forced the Trojans to punt the ball.  This would set Peterson and the REV for one last drive to attempt to tie the game and send it into overtime.

After receiving the ball, the REV would get to work on as Peterson connected with WR Joe Mapson for a 37 yard strike down to the Trojan 14-yard line.  Two plays later, Peterson attempted what looked to be a game-tying pass to Ellington, but resulted in an incomplete pass.  On 3rd and 4th down, Trojan DE Glenn came up big for the defense in charging the REV backfield to sack Peterson on back-to-back plays to end the game.  Glenn finished the game with 5 tackles, 4 sacks, a fumble recovery for a touchdown, and a forced fumble.  The Vegas Trojans’ debut resulted in victory over the back-to-back RMFL Champions to the open the season in the RMFL Big 9.

Next week, the Vegas Trojans will face the Vegas Hawks in Las Vegas and the Wasatch Revolution will look to bounce back against the Utah Wildcats in Layton, UT.
